Treating epilepsy is complex and begins with making the diagnosis. There are many medical conditions that can have similar symptoms like epileptic seizures, panic attacks, syncope, heart rhythm problems, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and many more. Testing including MRI and EEG help make the diagnosis but this can still be difficult. In those cases trying medications or doing continuous EEG monitorig to record the events can be very helpful. The choice of medication treatments is in the end a balance between risks and benefits which is very individual and so it is important for each individual to understand the options clearly.
